Read the Invitation First

The wording tells you more than the venue does.

If your office runs casual year round, a suit will read as too much. Take the jacket and the pants from separate cloths instead. That is a broken suit, and it is the standard answer for an office where nobody wears a full suit.

One place to spend the effort: the tie. It is the only part of this outfit that is allowed to be interesting, and it is the part people actually look at.

Three Outfits for the Office Party

Three Outfits for the Party With Friends

Here the suit gets to be the interesting part instead of the tie, because everyone in the room already knows you.

4. Green, worn like a normal suit. Juniper Green Linen Suit with a Midnight Bloom Silk Shirt underneath and no tie, Torino Bit Loafer in tan. The suit carries the whole outfit. Adding a patterned tie to a patterned shirt under a colored suit is the three-arguments problem.

Color, and How Far To Take It

December is the one month of the year when a deep green or a burgundy reads as deliberate rather than eccentric.

A Vest Instead of a Jacket

A vest over a shirt is the most underused Christmas party outfit there is.

It is dressed up without being hot, it survives a crowded room better than a jacket, and it costs less fabric than a full suit. It also works when you already own the shirt and the pants, which most men do.

Three Outfits Without a Suit

If the invitation says casual, or your office has never seen a full suit, start from pieces you already wear.

9. The quiet one. Sage Sharkskin Vest, Teal Blue Aloe Shirt, Cedar Brown Flannel Windowpane Pants. Three pieces, one pattern, no jacket. This is the outfit for the party where you will be standing for four hours and do not want to think about it again after you leave the house.

If You Are Very Slim, Very Tall or Built

A party outfit fails on proportion more often than on color. Three cases come up most, and we have written a guide for each body shape if you want the long version.

Very slim. A single-breasted jacket with a slightly higher buttoning point stops the outfit reading as empty through the chest. A vest helps here more than it helps anyone else, because it fills the space between the lapels. Our guide to the rectangle body shape covers this in full.

Built through the chest and shoulders. The armhole and the shoulder are what decide whether you can raise a glass without the whole jacket moving. Shoes

Whatever you wear on your feet is what you will be standing in for four hours.

Four things, in the order we see them.

Dressing for the venue instead of the invitation. A restaurant does not set the dress code, the host does.

Wearing the interview suit. Our interview guide is explicit that an interview calls for subtlety, understated tones and personal expression kept muted. That is the right brief for an interview and the wrong one for a party, where everyone else in the room has made an effort.

The novelty layer. A Christmas tie, a themed pocket square, anything with a reindeer on it. It gets one laugh at the door and then you wear it for the rest of the night.

Leaving it to the week of. Which brings us to the part that actually decides this.
