Leather Belts

Pick the color first, based on the shoes you will wear it with. Then check the leather, the buckle and the fit. For a suit, a slim, smooth leather belt works best; save suede for casual outfits.

Own one belt for each shoe color you wear with tailoring. For most men that means black plus the brown closest to their everyday dress shoes. Add a second brown when you own both light and dark brown shoes.

Dark brown shoes want a dark brown belt. Tan shoes want a tan or cognac belt. Oxblood shoes take an oxblood or close brown belt. Keep the undertones together: a warm tan belt clashes with cool espresso shoes.

Wear a belt when your trousers have belt loops. Choose suspenders for a cleaner line at the natural waist. Never wear both: they do the same job, and together they look cluttered.
