COTTON STRETCH

Made To Move With You

Our stretch cotton fabrics have just enough give to extend range of motion without sacrificing the look and feel of the garments. Available in both classic colors and bold hues, these are perfect for those wanting a bit of extra comfort.

How to Choose the Right Shorts for Hot Weather

Shorts are the hardest warm-weather garment to buy off a rack, because the waist, the seat and the leg are sized off one number. Every pair in this collection is cut from your own measurements instead, in fabrics chosen for heat.

Start With the Fabric

Linen blend is 60% linen and 40% cotton at 155 grams per square meter, the lightest weave here and the one that moves the most air. Stretch cotton is 97% cotton with 3% elastane, heavier and with enough give for a full day on your feet. Performance merino is the heaviest at 270 grams per square meter, an all-season stretch wool made for travel. If you are weighing linen against a blend, our guide to linen blend versus 100% linen covers the trade-off.

Then the Length

Seven inches sits well above the knee and reads casual. Nine inches sits just above it and is the length that still works with a collared shirt and leather shoes, which is where most smart casual dress codes draw the line in summer. Measure the inseam on a pair you already wear before you order.

Then the Fit Profile

Build it once with Digital Tailor, measure yourself, or copy the numbers off a pair you own. A tailor reviews the profile before anything is cut, and the same profile cuts your short sleeve shirts and pants afterwards. Every pair here is machine washable.

How Long Should Men's Shorts Be?

Seven and nine inches are the two lengths most men wear. A seven inch inseam sits well above the knee and reads more casual; a nine inch inseam sits just above the knee and works better with a collared shirt. If you are unsure, measure the inseam on a pair you already wear and start there. Our shorts are cut from your measurements rather than sold in fixed sizes.

What Are Bermuda Length Shorts?

Bermuda shorts end at or just above the knee, roughly a nine to eleven inch inseam on most men. They are the dressiest length of short and the one that holds up in a smart casual setting. Anything much longer starts to read as a cropped pant rather than a short.

Are Linen Shorts Good for Hot Weather?

Yes, and they are the lightest option here. Our linen blend is 60% linen and 40% cotton at 155 grams per square meter, which is the lowest weight in the collection, so it moves air better than cotton or wool. The cotton in the blend also makes it less prone to creasing than pure linen. There is more on the difference in our guide to linen blend versus 100% linen.

How Do You Style Linen Shorts?

Pair them with a short sleeve shirt rather than a tee if you want them to read smart, and finish with loafers or clean leather sneakers. Keep the colors in the same family: sand, beige and cream shorts sit well under white, light blue and olive. A belt is optional, but a tucked or half-tucked shirt makes more difference than the belt does.

Can You Wear Shorts for Smart Casual?

Often, yes, though it depends on the setting. Tailored shorts at a knee-length inseam with a collared shirt and leather shoes fit most smart casual dress codes in warm weather. Athletic shorts, cargo shorts and flip-flops do not. Our smart casual dress code guide goes through where the line usually sits.

How Should Shorts Fit?

The waistband should sit without a belt pulling it in. The seat should be smooth rather than pulling across it when you sit down. The leg opening should clear your thigh with room to move but not flare. Because every pair is cut from your own measurements, you are not trading one of those three off against the others.

Are These Shorts Machine Washable?

Yes. Every pair in this collection is machine washable, including the linen blend, which is unusual for linen. Wash cool, and iron the linen blend on medium while it is still slightly damp. The stretch cotton and the performance merino can be ironed on low if they need it.

How Long Does a Custom Pair of Shorts Take?

Standard delivery is three weeks. Priority is two weeks, and rush arrives in seven to eight days, shipping two to three days after you order. Shipping is free on orders over $250. If you are ordering for a trip, order at least a month ahead so there is room for an alteration.
